Ever since 2003 the price of gas in America has been going up. At first we look at this and sneer, dreading paying the bills in the upcoming month. "I remember," we say, "when gas was less than a dollar per gallon. It was so cheap, the rates were in gallons per dollar, not dollars per gallon." But now people all over the world are paying almost four dollars a gallon for their gas. But then, is that really such a bad thing?
On the surface gas prices may seem horrible, but I disagree. Up to a point, gas prices should go up in my opinion. People might become poor, and, at the extreme, there might even be a great depression. But I doubt it. But let us say that we did end up in another depression. We would recover. We have done it in the past. But global warming, a problem that is becoming ever more present, it is not so clear there would be a solution once the polar icecaps melt.
With gas prices going up, one of the more obvious solutions that Americans are taking is buying hybrids or electric cars to conserve their gas intake. There is not just the effect of poorer, unhappy Americans with the prices going up in gas. First, the precious little of it we have left is being conserved and used much less recklessly and lasting longer. Second, the global warming, in theory is slowing down and finally, humans are becoming less dependent on gas, a resource that sooner or later we will have to deal without all together.
So next time you pull in to the Seven Eleven to buy your gas and see the astounding prices, think again about how bad it would really be if the prices kept rising.
